How to fix issue with Symantec Endpoint client not installing due to a required reboot.

I had a Windows 2008 server that I was attempting to install the Symantec Endpoint client on, but the client would not install, and the following message was left in the event log:

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) Installation fails with the following error “Symantec Endpoint Protection has detected that there are pending system changes that require a reboot. Please reboot the system and rerun the installation.”

I rebooted the server and then tried to install the client again, but the same error would appear.

I found that there was a registry entry that was giving me grief with the install, and here are the instructions that I used to fix the problem.

  1. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations

  2. Back up the registry key
  3. Delete the registry key
  4. Install the software without restarting the computer first (Restarting the computer may result in the registry key being placed back in the registry before installation.)
  5. Restore the registry key from the backup location.

NOTE: If you are running  Windows Vista look for this key -  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet001\Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations

* Thanks to Bill for this Windows Vista suggestion.

    I am using SEP 11.0.5002.333 on Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 (64-bit).
    BUT … I could not get it to push out unattended from the SEPM console.
    After much forum searching (this one and others) and trial, the following process seems to work consistently:

    Log on to the target machine;
    Install Live Update manually (from the expanded CD, run ‘LUsetup.exe’);
    On the target machine, search for the reg key “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations”; delete that key if present;
    In Services manager, find the service “Interactive Services Detection” and ‘disable’ it;
    Reboot the target;
    From the SEPM console, push out the install;
    On the target machine, set the service “Interactive Services Detection” back to ‘manual’;
    Reboot the target.

    Cheers

    I have big time problem installing Symantec RU6 in a brand new Windows 7 installation, This is my solution: Search and delete all entries for “PendingFileRenameOperations” also deleted all Temp files from USERS\xxxxxx\APPDATA\LOCAL\TEMP.
    Some one asked here why Symantec does not fix this problems???, ‘cos they don’t know how !!! until people like us pay BIG TIME Inconvenience and do their JOB !!! Symantec, Microfoft and other big ones wait until they read blogs like this and then turn around and fixed the inconclusive products….

    I have looked for the specific registry path, but I only see the following;

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\FileRenameOperations

    I the path….”Pending” FileRenameOperations is not listed. The only registry entry found is the following;
    (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

    I have even run the Symantec troubleshooter and no problems are found.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks :-)
